NORMANDY PARK, WA - August 16, 2006 - For most online shoppers,
it is almost like second nature to enter their credit card
information in a Web form and click the "submit" button. As with
every busy shopping season, however, consumers should be on the
alert when it comes to security, now more than ever.
The more the Web grows, the more fraudulent sites are appearing.
The benefits of online shopping are tremendous, but the risks are
still there, even after years of progress for online security.
Robert Tyack, owner of a fast-growing shopping mall called
MyTimeShopping.com, reveals five ways Web consumers can keep
their personal information secure while shopping freely on the
Internet. He has experience working with consumers and the entire
order processing method, and understands how easily credit card
security can be compromised.
"Shoppers can still have a fun and safe experience while shopping
for all their personal or gift items if they remember these five
crucial tips," states Tyack.
1. Secure Web Address - Look for the "S"
Before entering that credit card number, shoppers should
take just a moment to glance at the URL address in their
browser. Is it secure? An easy way to know is to look
for the "s" after the "http." It will look like this:
"https://www" before the actual web address.
Also, the bottom of the browser will have a lock and key
symbol that is showing the page is "locked" or secure. A
secure Web page means that a hacker would have a very
difficult time getting to the credit card information on
the company's order forms.
2. Use Online Search Engines
Search engines provide a wealth of information when it
comes to online security. Personal searches on a
particular company can be done if a shopper feels uneasy
about buying from them. Shoppers should use key phrases
such as customer service, secure, complaints or even "I
bought" along with the actual company name to see if
others have had experience with the company.
3. Beware of Fraudulent Emails
There has been a series of spam or fraudulent emails
going around for several years that will prompt users to
enter their log-in or credit card information for certain
Internet companies. The problem with these emails is
they claim to be from a well-known company the shopper
may recognize.
The email will make a claim that the shopper must verify
their account information or credit card information to
reactivate their account. These come in many shapes and
forms, so web users should be aware of any emails asking
them to verify personal or log-in information. They
should always go directly to the actual company's web
site they are claiming to be by typing the URL into the
browser and then contact the company about the email.
Don't click any links in the actual email and don't reply
to these types of emails.
4. Consolidate Shopping
If shopping for multiple items, shoppers should try to
locate a dependable online mall for all or most of their
needs. This is especially wise around the holiday season
when buying many gifts for loved ones. By doing this,
shoppers only have to enter their credit card information
at one web location instead of many, thus reducing
security risks.
5. Check with the Better Business Bureau
If shoppers are uncertain about the reputation of a
company, they should check with the Better Business Bureau
site for complaints against the company. It is fast and
free to check up on any business.
"Those who have security in mind and know how to recognize scams
can enjoy the convenience of shopping freely on the Web," states
Tyack.
