NEW BOOK, AMORES, CHRONICLES LISBON'S LAUNCH OF THE "FLOATING ISLAND" PROJECT,

LISBON, PORTUGAL - November 22, 2005 - On November 30, at 6:30pm, at
the Quadrum Contemporary Art Gallery in Lisbon, Portugal, a book,
titled "Amores" (available in English and Portuguese), will be
released in conjuction with an exhibition of architectural projects
for creating a "floating island" in Lisbon. The book and the project
are part of a program for the candidature of Lisbon as the city to
host the Olympic Games in 2020.
"Amores", published by the British organization ASA Art and
Technology and written by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta with a foreword
by Antonio Cerveira Pinto, tells in 96 pages of graphics, drawings and
images, the history of the floating island project.
Elaborated by Pimenta, who was invited to work on the project by
Pinto, the floating island is a gigantic system of interchangeable
modules can be expanded or moved, completely or partially, to
practically any place in a large estuary and will exclusively make use
of renewable energies. The floating island project has also been named
"Amores" (Loves), to celebrate the legendary Renaissance Portuguese
poet, Luis Vaz de Camoes. The future development of the project, as
well as the definition of its multiple uses, will be under the
responsibility of groups formed by young architects, engineers, urban
planners, ecologists, sociologists, artists and thinkers.
This floating mega structure is integrated in a larger project, called
"The Great Estuary", that seeks to redesign the entire coast of the
Tagus Estuary. By making a complete transformation of the city and the
environment by integrating the ancient 15th century buildings and
contemporary architecture, Lisbon hopes to be considered a candidate
to host the Olympic Games in 2020.
